Ellen Christine Wiersema

She was born in Bandung on the island of Java as a third child in a family of four. When she was three years old, the family moved to the Netherlands. Leaving all that they had behind. From Katwijk via Bloemendaal and Oegstgeest, the family made their home in Soest, close to Utrecht.

This is where Christine grew up and developed her interet for photography. She pursued this hobby for several years. She also experimented creativity in the darkroom, developing her own photo's.

After her secondary school she went into nursing. During the 80's, Yugoslav naive painting attracted her to such an extent that, even during her training to be a nurse she regulary went to Paris to look and buy art. Later on in Greece she produced her first naive painting.

When living in Amsterdam she took painting lessons at the Hogeschool Holland drawing and crafts department for a couple of years and exhibited her work in the Hague, Zaandam, Amsterdam and Delft. During this period, her style was described as magic realistic, with a driven sense of colours. She studied anatomy and the nude and her acquantance with sculptures dates from this period. Christine sculpted a figurine and cast this in bronze herself.

In 1989 she met her husband Larry, who shares her love for drawing, painting and art in general. After they moved to Rotterdam, their shared love for the visual arts resulted in the foundation of the "Rotterdamse School", where upto now they have been working together with several other artists. They have two children, LouLou and Bernhard, who both are an inspiration to them.

From 1997 onwards she concentrated solely on sculpting and casting bronze figurines. Her subjects vary from nudes - Rubenesque figurines and angels - to commissions for children's heads and studies of dancers of the dance academy. Her work is best described as romantic-realistic.

Besides sculpting Christine studied at Nijmegen University for universal wisdom, and is a gifted Tarotist. The combination of spiritualism and art is what makes her art special. Troisième d’une famille de quatre enfants, Christine est née à Bandung sur l’île de Java. Elle avait trois ans quand sa famille décida de déménager aux Pays Bas. De Katwijk via Bloemendaal et Oegstgeest, la famille s’installa finalement à Soest, près de Utrecht.

C’est là où Christine a développé son intérêt pour la photographie pendant plusieurs années. Elle a également laissé parler sa créativité dans la chambre noire, en développant ses propres photos

Après ses études secondaires, elle poursuivit des études d’infirmière.

En quittant Amsterdam, elle prit des cours de peinture à Hogeschool Holland, de dessin et de travaux manuels pendant 2 ans et exposa ses oeuvres à la Hayes, Zaandam, Amsterdam et Delft. Au cours de cette période, son style était décrit comme réaliste magique, de par son sens inné des couleurs. Elle étudia l’anatomie et le nu et son goût pour la sculpture remonte d’ailleurs à cette époque. Christine sculpte ses figurines et les coule dans le bronze elle-même.

En 1989 elle rencontra son mari Larry, qui partage son amour pour le dessin la peinture et l’art en général. Puis, ils déménagèrent à Rotterdam, et partagèrent un intérêt commun pour les ars visuels. Il en résulta la fondation "Rotterdamse School", où jusqu’à ce jour, ils travaillent ensemble avec d’autres artistes. Ils ont aujourd’hui 2 enfants LouLou et Bernhard, qui sont sources ‘inspiration pour leurs parents.

Depuis 1997, elle s’est essentiellement concentrée sur les sculptures de bronze. Ses sujets varient allant du nu- figurines et anges de Rubenesque – aux visages d’enfants et à l’étude des danseurs de l’académie de danse. Son travaille s’inscrit dans le réalisme romantique.

En plus de la sculpture, Christine a étudié à l’Université de Njmegen lasagesse universelle et est reconnue en tant que tarotier. La combinaison de la spiritualité et de l’art rendent ses œuvres spéciales. Elle a exposé ses œuvres à Rotterdam et en Suisse (voir l’article où son travail est internationalement reconnu).
